Employment Process Manual, Preparing Interview Questions

The interviewer's role during the interview is to gather as much information as possible to determine whether or not the applicant fits the job. When interviewing several applicants, it's best to plan a structured interview. During the interview, ask each applicant the same core questions and then follow up to probe for more information and to clarify responses.

  • When developing interview questions:
    • Be brief
    • Make sure the questions are job related
    • Ask questions one at a time
    • Anticipate an appropriate answer and be prepared to follow up with additional questions
    • Use words that are natural for you to use
    • Develop as many open-ended questions as is practical
    • Avoid using acronyms; use words that make sense to the applicant
