Department of Veterans Affairs Disability Ratings

Veterans awarded a Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) disability rating have the option to utilize Veterans Readiness and Employment (VR&E) services. These veterans may be eligible to receive job training, resume development, employment assistance and many other services. Veterans are highly encouraged to learn about VR&E before selecting and studying coursework that leads to a particular career path. For additional information, or to apply for VR&E, visit the Veterans Readiness and Employment website.

Registering with Disability Support Services

Registering with the Office of Disability Support Services (DSS) is an important step to take before registering for classes at Seminole State.

While disability evaluations and documentation by the VA may be helpful when seeking academic adjustments, it is important to note that the standards used by the military in determining disability for the purpose of separation and benefits are different from the standards set by the Americans with Disabilities Act.

Examples of academic adjustments may include:

  • Tutoring
  • Extended time on exams
  • Help from notetakers

When requesting academic accommodation, please be aware that a VA disability does not automatically justify the need for academic accommodations.

In most cases, a request for accommodations must be supported with medical documentation explaining how the disability affects your learning and other major life activities related to the post-secondary educational setting.

To register with the Office of Disability Support Services at Seminole State, please review DSS documentation guidelines and steps to register.
