Deafness/Hearing Impairments

Disability Support Services (DSS) is proud to support the educational goals of students who are deaf or hard of hearing through an array of services and auxiliary devices. Seminole State College employs only the highest quality professional interpreters and captionists, and strives to remain up-to-date on the latest technology for our students.

Communication is provided for hearing-impaired students in their preferred mode. Whether a student uses speech/lip-reading, signed English or American Sign Language determines the accommodation.

Locating interpreters often requires time. It is imperative that students requiring interpreter services register for classes and contact Disability Support Services as early as possible to prevent delays in the acquisition of an interpreter. 

Seminole State seeks to provide equal access to communication on campus and in the classroom. It is the College's goal to eliminate barriers wherever they exist. Students who need accommodations to access campus activities and programs must make timely written requests with Disability Support Services (a minimum of two weeks prior).

Common Accommodations

Accommodations for students who are deaf or hard of hearing may include

  • Sign Language Interpreter

  • Double time on exams/quizzes
  • Note taker
  • Captioning of audio/visual materials

Communication Resources

  • Sorenson Video Relay - Sorenson Communications offers a free video phone to anyone who is deaf or hard of hearing. To obtain a video phone or inquire about ntouch® Mobile, which enables your smartphone to become a video phone, you can contact Sorenson VRS.
  • Seminole State also provides free use of a video phone at the Sanford/Lake Mary campus’ Student Center in the Disability Support Services office, room 130.

Florida Coordinating Council for the Deaf and Hard of Hearing – This organization assists Deaf and Hard of Hearing individuals with a variety of services. Some of their resources include assistance with employment and links to many useful websites.

Center for Independent Living (CIL)– Center for Independent Living is an excellent resources for students who need help with communication assistance outside the College, driver’s license training, tax prep help, school-to-work transition or advocacy outside the College.  To learn more about all their available resources, please visit CIL or call 407.623.1070.

 American Medical Professionals with Hearing Loss (AMPHL) – AMPHL is an organization dedicated to providing Deaf/Hard of Hearing individuals with information on advocacy, mentorship and resources for those pursuing a career in the medical field. AMPHL

Described and Captioned Media Program (DCMP) – DCMP has a wide variety of videos that are captioned and a multitude that also include sign language. They offer a program for students entering college called, “Map It.” It specifically guides Deaf/Hard of Hearing pre-college students to answer the questions, “Who Am I?” “What do I Want?” and “How do I Get There?” as it specifically relates to transitioning to college. This online training requires a free membership to DCMP to access it. DCMP - What comes next

Vocational Rehabilitation (VR)–  VR  helps the deaf, hard of hearing or disabled gain or retain meaningful employment that may include interpreters for job interviews and other services. Contact your local VR services office to learn the different ways VR can assist you.
