First Generation Program Success Story: Emily Gearhart

Emily Gearhart chose Seminole State because of the small class sizes, personalized instruction, its convenient location, and because she received a scholarship through the First Generation Program.

Gearhart participated in campus involvement opportunities, including the Environmental Club, Phi Theta Kappa (PTK), and Seminole State Volunteers campus organizations (SSV).  She was also a Peer Mentor for the First Generation Program Office.  Gearhart says, "I enjoy participating in campus activities and forging new friendships with like-minded people."

Gearhart shares that taking the class College Success (SLS 1101) during her first semester was an excellent decision that benefited her greatly.  "Taking this class during my freshman year taught me a lot about myself and what my learning styles are, as well as teaching me efficient ways to study, which I have implemented throughout my time here at SSC."

Gearhart is pursuing her Associate in Arts (A.A.) degree in Biology and plans to transfer to the University of Central Florida (UCF) to complete her Bachelor's degree in Biology.  Her aspirations are to apply to medical school.  Gearhart says, "I love anything that has to do with science.  I love being able to understand human anatomy, how other organisms function, and the amazing natural processes that occur every day on Earth."
