Foreign Language Achievement Testing Services (FLATS)

The FLATS Program allows Seminole State students to take a language proficiency exam to meet graduation requirements pursuant to foreign languages.

* These languages are not available as computer based format. They area administered as a paper based format and require an additional fee and time for processing.  Please submit your request approximately 15 days before your desired test date.

Procedure to Schedule the FLATS Exam

To register for the FLATS exam:

  • Complete the registration form on the FLATS Registration website
    • You must complete your registration at least 10 days prior to the desired exam date.
    • You are NOT registered with BYU until you complete the payment information and receive your confirmation email(s).
  • Once the registration is processed by BYU you will receive two confirmation emails:
    • First is a payment receipt
    • Second with information about the test, which includes a password
  •  Schedule & Test with the Assessment & Testing Center
    • Submit the form below.

Additional FAQs

Seminole State College does not award academic credit for the BYU-FLATS foreign language achievement examinations.

Passing the proficiency exam may only be used to meet the following graduation requirement:

  • The Florida language admissions requirement to all Florida public colleges and universities (Florida Statutes, Section 1007.262) mandates two (2) credits in one (1) foreign language at the secondary level or the equivalent at the postsecondary level for the baccalaureate degree.
    • Eight (8) to ten (10) semester credits in one (1) foreign language at the postsecondary level shall be considered to produce the competency specified, or students may show a modern language proficiency (at the intermediate level) equivalent to two years in high school or eight college credits in a single language.
    • A standardized examination for modern language may be used to meet the requirement. (Students who have previously received a baccalaureate degree from a regionally accredited institution are exempt from this requirement.)
  • Examinations are designed to test beginning-level (e.g., 1101, 1102, and 2101) listening comprehension, reading comprehension, and grammatical accuracy.
  • All tests require approximately two and a half hours to complete.
  • Please check with your advisor to  confirm that this assessment fits with your educational plan.
  • Seminole State College does not award academic credit for the above foreign language achievement examination. 
    • It may only be used to fulfill certain graduation requirements. 
  • The total cost is $85.00 per exam 
    • $50 to paid directly to BYU during registration
    •  $35* test fee paid to Seminole State on exam day

  • After taking the FLATS exam, the student will receive an unofficial email with preliminary a Pass or Fail notification.
  • The official results will be mailed from BYU to the institution requested during registration, within 2 – 3 weeks of the exam date.
