Going back to school can be overwhelming to some students, especially when you’re going from high school to college. Stepping on to that campus may be a milestone event, one you document on your social media platforms with a selfie that shows a bright smile. But, let’s be honest here, inside you’re probably nervous. Where is my first class? What about my second class? How do I get all the way across campus? Where can I buy a soda?

Luckily, you’re not alone. Thousands of students have been in your shoes before, and thousands more will follow. Dr. Geoffrey Fortunato, associate vice president of Student Services at Seminole State College, offers the following tips to help you achieve success, find that soda machine, and maybe a friend or two along the way.

  • Don’t be afraid to connect and ask for help. Take the time to find out who your advisor is, get to know him or her along with your professors and classmates. Establishing these relationships early on can help you become better acclimated in your new setting.
  • Grow your support network! Chat with your parents, partners, children and your employer about your coursework and schedule so they know what demands are being placed on your time. Having their understanding and support will make a world of difference.
  • Manage your time wisely. Entering college is an amazing experience and for some, they want to conquer it all right away. Don’t overextend yourself! Make sure you find a balance and establish a pace that works best for you and paves the path for success.
  • Invest in Yourself Outside the Classroom. Seminole State offers lots of great activities. Pursue opportunities such as student activities and clubs, career development resources, leadership opportunities, and resources that will help you connect with others.
  • Get smart, moneywise. Make sure you develop a sound financial plan and work closely with your advisor and financial aid resources to identify ways you can offset some of the costs of higher education. You may be surprised to learn that your employer offers to pay for a class every semester, or that a community organization provides scholarships you’re eligible for.
  • Own it! Take responsibility for this amazing opportunity. You are now responsible for meeting deadlines not only for coursework, but also for financial aid, add/drop scheduling, graduation and more. Stay up to date with all the key dates on the college’s website, and develop a proactive strategy.

Following these tips will put you on the path to success and graduation. To learn more about resources that can help you make the most of your college experience, visit seminolestate.edu/student-info
