Florida Department of Education Adult ESOL Curriculum

The Florida Department of Education ESOL Curriculum documents have been posted to assist instructors in developing and planning lessons that best suit the needs of English language learners. For an overview of the curriculum, please review this slide presentation.

The ESOL Curriculum Framework consists of:

  • The College and Career Readiness (CCR) standards which are the end goal of adult ESOL students as they work towards achieving their long-term personal and career goals.
  • The English Language Proficiency (ELP) standards which provide guidance to instructors in the types of linguistic supports students may need.
  • The Life and Work Competencies which provide the context for building lessons that are delivered through the ELPS standards for each ESOL level.

The ELP standards focus on overall language development in English learners. The CCR standards cover the academic content and rigor along with accuracy in grammar, punctuation, spelling, and vocabulary. The CCR Standards and ELP Standards reflect three key instructional advances:

  • Complex text
  • Evidence from text
  • Content-rich text

The following documents are provided to assist instructors in developing and planning lessons that best suit the needs of their English language learners.

Context for Building Lessons: Life and Work Competencies

The CCR and ELP standards should be taught contextually by building lessons around life and work competencies that relate to students' personal and career goals. The competencies address the full range of adult ESOL levels. Some competencies are more applicable to beginning levels and others to advanced levels.
