Fire sprinkler apprentice finds pathway to career success at Seminole State

As Seminole State College of Florida joins organizations across the country in recognizing National Workforce Development Month, apprenticeship programs continue to demonstrate their value in preparing skilled workers for high-demand careers. For Luke Phillips, a second-year fire sprinkler apprentice with Siemens, the College’s Fire Sprinkler System Technology Apprenticeship program has provided a pathway to professional growth, personal development and long-term career stability.

A Legacy in Fire Protection

Phillips’ interest in fire protection began long before he pursued a career in the field. Growing up in California, he watched his father work long hours installing fire sprinkler systems as the family’s sole provider. 

“My dad worked fire sprinklers my whole life. He worked really hard and always made sure we had the best life he could give us,” he said.

Inspired by his father's work, Phillips developed an early interest in the trade. Although traditional school wasn’t where he thrived, he said something clicked when he was introduced to fire protection systems in a college course.

“The only class I’ve ever gotten above an A in was fire protection – sprinklers, alarms, pre-action systems. That’s when I realized this was for me,” he said.

On the Move

Soon after, an opportunity opened that would change everything. Phillips learned about an apprenticeship position in Florida and decided to take a leap of faith. He dropped everything in California and traveled cross-country to Florida.

Since then, Luke has built a strong foundation professionally and personally. He has settled into his life on the East Coast and says he feels confident about his chosen career path.

“Anything involving working with my hands – changing out a head, installing a branch line or a main – that’s what I enjoy most,” he said.

In addition to the hands-on training, the variety of the job has also appealed to him. Through his apprenticeship, Phillips has worked across Florida, traveling to Tampa, Orlando, Daytona and the Space Coast.

Building Confidence on the Job

Beyond helping apprentices develop technical expertise, workforce training programs often play a significant role in personal growth. Phillips said his experience has helped him become more receptive to feedback and better understand the value of learning from others.

Professionally, he credits the apprenticeship with building confidence, discipline and teamwork skills that will serve him throughout his career.

“It gives you grit and confidence,” Phillips said. “If you’re confident in yourself, you can accomplish almost anything.”

Classroom instruction has also reinforced the practical skills he learns on the job. By combining real-world experience with formal training, the apprenticeship has accelerated his understanding of the trade. Seminole State’s program also allows him to learn directly from experienced professionals, including an instructor who serves as his foreman.

“Being able to ask questions in class and then apply it on the job site right away has helped me learn so much faster,” Phillips said. For students considering the fire sprinkler trade, he offers this advice: “You’re never at a standstill. You’re always learning and moving forward. The job security is great, and if you apply yourself, you’ll do well.”
