In every classroom, there are students who leave a lasting impression—not just for their talent, but for their spirit. Ed Dworkin is one of those students.

At the height of the pandemic in 2020, Dworkin enrolled in the Acting I class at Seminole State College of Florida through a program for senior citizens, which offers seniors the opportunity to take one free class each semester.

“From our very first Zoom session, it was clear: Ed had a deep love for the stage and the arts,” said Professor Niki Salamon.

Salamon says Dworkin has made a powerful
impact on Seminole State's Theater Department.

That spring, he advanced to Acting II and joined the theatre program’s virtual theatre tour that was streamed to middle and high schools during the pandemic. Even through a screen, Ed’s presence resonated. When Seminole State returned to in-person classes the following fall, Dworkin rejoined the tour, visiting schools and connecting with students in powerful ways.

One moment stands out: during a visit to Teague Middle School, students were so captivated by Dworkin’s story—his return to college, his career as a veterinarian and his passion for theater—that they directed nearly every question to him during the talkback. When he couldn’t join the tour the next semester due to a scheduling conflict, those same students held up signs cheering him on from afar. “It was such a powerful reminder of how much he means to all of us – and how deeply he's touched everyone he's met,” Salamon said.

Over the past five years, Dworkin has become a beloved member of Seminole State’s Theatre Department. He has performed in numerous productions, collaborated with the College’s film students on short films, and continued to inspire everyone around him. Even after facing a serious illness last summer, he returned in the fall with renewed strength and determination.

This spring, Dworkin celebrated his 75th birthday in class—a milestone that reminded his peers and professors alike of his vibrant spirit and tenacity.

Dworkin’s example of resilience, passion and a lifelong dedication to learning also earned him praise at Seminole State’s May Board of Trustees meeting, where the trustees honored him with the “We Change Lives” award. It’s an appropriate honor for someone who has impacted the lives of so many.

“What I’ve learned from Ed is invaluable: patience, perseverance and the importance of embracing life’s challenges with grace,” Salamon said. “Ed is the perfect example of someone who continues to grow to give and to inspire.”
