Seminole State College of Florida mathematics professor Grace Nasnas has been named the 2025 Association of Florida Colleges (AFC) Professor of the Year, recognizing her exceptional commitment to teaching, leadership and student success.

In her 14 years at Seminole State, Nasnas has earned a reputation for transforming the way students experience mathematics. From her start as a part-time instructor to her current role as a full-time faculty leader, she has continually inspired students and colleagues alike through her clarity, creativity and care in the classroom. Students describe her teaching as innovative, engaging, and fun and often credit her with making a lasting impact that extends far beyond the final exam.

The AFC Professor of the Year Award honors outstanding faculty across Florida’s 28 state and community colleges who demonstrate excellence in teaching and service. Nominees undergo a rigorous selection process that includes a portfolio review and a formal presentation to a panel of AFC judges.

In her nomination letter, Dr. Loretta Ovueraye, Seminole State’s vice president of Academic Affairs and chief academic officer, praised Nasnas for embodying the very best of what the award represents. Ovueraye described her as a faculty member who “exemplifies instructional excellence, leadership, and unwavering dedication to student success,” noting that her ability to explain complex mathematical concepts with patience and precision sets her apart as an educator. She also highlighted Nasnas’ willingness to “go above and beyond scheduled hours to support students academically and professionally,” and her leadership in guiding faculty through instructional reform, online proctoring solutions and textbook affordability efforts.

Beyond her work in the classroom, Nasnas plays a vital role in advancing mathematics education at Seminole State. As lead instructor for statistics, she has spearheaded curriculum updates and innovative teaching practices designed to make learning more engaging and accessible. She also serves on several collegewide committees, including the Quality Enhancement Plan (QEP) Advisory Board, and has represented the faculty on the Seminole State College Foundation Board, where she helps build partnerships that expand scholarship opportunities for students.

Her dedication has earned her multiple recognitions, including the Ken Sylvester Faculty Excellence Award in both 2022 and 2024, and the Endowed Teaching Chair Award in 2025 which is the College’s highest faculty distinction.

While balancing full teaching and service responsibilities, Nasnas is also pursuing her doctorate at Florida State University, demonstrating what Ovueraye called “exceptional time management, drive, and passion for her field.”

Reflecting on the award, Nasnas said she feels grateful for the opportunity to do work she loves in a supportive and inspiring environment. She shared that Seminole State has encouraged her to innovate, collaborate and continually grow as an educator, adding that she hopes to “help others discover the beauty and possibilities within mathematics.”
