Students graduating from Seminole State College of Florida this spring will have an opportunity to safely celebrate their achievement with family and friends during the College’s virtual graduation ceremony on May 20 at 7 p.m. EST. With the coronavirus pandemic canceling plans for the in-person Spring 2020 Commencement, the College will host graduation online to honor its students.

“Our graduates are to be congratulated for their perseverance and for overcoming challenges to complete their degree or certificate,” said Seminole State President Dr. Georgia Lorenz. “They have thrived during these unprecedented times and deserve to be recognized. A virtual ceremony can’t fully replace the pomp and circumstance of a traditional commencement, but we hope our graduates and their families will enjoy this celebration.”

Through the use of technology, the virtual graduation ceremony will include some elements of a traditional in-person ceremony including a keynote address by Seminole County Supervisor of Elections Chris Anderson and a faculty challenge from Professor of Communication Laura Dickinson, which were recorded from previous commencements. The ceremony will also include video remarks from Dr. Lorenz and Seminole State Board of Trustees Chairman Scott Howat.

Although graduates will not cross a stage this spring, they will still have a virtual moment in the spotlight. Graduates will have an opportunity to add their photo and a message to be shown on a slide that features their name, major and honors. They can then download their personalized slide and share it on social media to commemorate the occasion.

Information for the virtual graduation ceremony will be available at seminolestate.edu/graduation as details are finalized. Spring graduates will also be invited to participate in Seminole State’s Fall 2020 Commencement in December.
