Seminole State alumna Cate Kandle is continuing her passion of sustainable agriculture.
As one of the most recent Jack Kent Cooke scholarship recipients in Seminole State College history, Cate Kandle used her 2017 transfer scholarship to enroll at Unity College in Maine, a small environmental college where she has been studying sustainable agriculture and taking full advantage of the incredible landscape and like-minded individuals throughout the region.
During the Fall semester, Kandle was recognized as an emerging leader and awarded the opportunity to attend VERGE 18 in California, a conference focusing on sustainable transportation, energy and the circular economy.
Following that experience, Kandle organized a team of students from Unity College to attend the New England Food System Innovation Challenge. Her team competed against three other colleges, winning a $2,000 prize to further work on a pilot they had designed for front-yard garden installation in Portland, Maine.
Mauricio "Mo" Garcia, the Assistant Director of Student Life, at Seminole State encouraged Kandle to apply for the JKC scholarship, which she says has helped her to feel confident in the fact that she can affect change.
For anyone considering applying for a JKC scholarship, Kandle suggests “letting your passion shine through and whether that door opens for you or a better one is waiting, the self-exploration will certainly help you in the long run.”
