Seminole State a platinum sponsor of Sanford MLK 2020 Celebration Weekend

Seminole State College of Florida is partnering with the Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Celebration Steering Committee to sponsor the City of Sanford’s MLK 2020 Celebration Weekend.

Several events will take place over the weekend of Jan. 17-20 including an oratorical contest, celebration banquet, interfaith service, and a parade followed by Festival in the Park at Fort Mellon Park on the shores of Lake Monroe in downtown Sanford.

MLK Oratorical Contest
Friday, Jan. 17, 6 - 10 p.m.
Seminole State College, Building C, Sanford/Lake Mary Campus

Student Orators

The contest is open to local high school seniors who are required to write a speech on selected topics on Dr. King and conduct an oral presentation in front of a panel of local community leaders and educators. MLK Scholarships will be awarded in the following names:  

  • Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.
  • Former Sanford Mayor Bettye D. Smith (creator, Dr. MLK, Jr. Committee)
  • Doris Thomas (deceased), founding committee member and Seminole County educator
  • One-year scholarship to the highest-placing orator who plans to attend Seminole State College upon graduation


33rd Annual MLK Banquet
Saturday, Jan. 18
 Sanford Civic Center

Annual MLK Banquet

The 2020 Commemorative Banquet will be held at the Sanford Civic Center. College leaders, faculty, staff and student leaders will attend this ticketed event.


MLK Interfaith Service
Sunday, Jan. 19, 3 p.m.
House of Refuge Ministries

MLK Interfaith Service

The interfaith service will be held at House of Refuge Ministries, 1001 Celery Avenue, Sanford.


MLK Parade
Monday, Jan 20, 10 a.m.- noon
Historic Goldsboro Boulevard

MLK Parade

The parade will start at 10 a.m. at the intersection of Historic Goldsboro Boulevard and Persimmon Avenue and proceed east to Holly Avenue. Seminole State students and athletes will march in the parade.


Festival in the Park
Monday, Jan 20, 1– 6 p.m.
Fort Mellon Park, Sanford

Festival in the Park

The Community Day event will begin immediately following the parade on the event grounds at Ft. Mellon Park on the shores of Lake Monroe. The College will host a display table with giveaways and information about the 200+ academic programs available at its four campuses.
