What Really Counts

Dominick Salfi

Nothing in this world can take the place of persistence. Talent will not: nothing is more common than unsuccessful people with talent. Genius will not: unrewarded genius is almost a proverb. Education will not: the world is full of educated derelicts. Persistence and determination alone are omnipotent.

Persistence was the cornerstone of Dominick Salfi’s lifelong success as a practicing attorney, the first state attorney for the 18th Circuit District at the age of 29, a participant in the governor’s war on crime, and the youngest circuit judge of the 18th Judicial Circuit at age 33. Throughout his tenure, Dominick Salfi continuously worked to develop innovative methods to improve the delivery of judicial services.

The Honorable Dominick Salfi devoted his life to the belief that the legal profession was vital to society as it acts as a pillar of the justice system, ensuring individuals and entities understand their rights and obligations, upholding the rule of law, advocating for fair dispute resolution, and facilitating social change by challenging unjust laws. Throughout the country’s history, our society has continually evolved, and lawyers have been at the heart of creating, interpreting and litigating the laws needed to ensure our individual rights remain protected.

In memory of his life accomplishments, his wife, Gayle Hair, established the Honorable Dominick Salfi Endowed Scholarship for Persistence in Legal Studies to assist students who have shown persistence to obtain their degree and have demonstrated their initiative to uphold the principles of honesty, fairness and truthfulness in the legal system and their integrity as a legal professional.
