Acceptable Use of Artificial Intelligence Technologies (Policy 7.200)

Purpose

Seminole State College (College) recognizes the transformative potential of Artificial Intelligence (AI) in enhancing education, research, and administration. This policy establishes ethical, secure, and responsible use of AI technologies to support institutional goals while safeguarding privacy, academic integrity, and legal compliance.

Scope

This policy applies to college staff, students, and contracted vendors who create, share, distribute, or process AI-generated content. It covers all AI-generated formats, including text, images, audio, and video.

Definitions

Artificial Intelligence (AI): Systems that simulate human intelligence, including learning, reasoning, and language understanding.

AI Tools/Systems: Technologies that perform tasks requiring human-like intelligence, either autonomously or semi-autonomously.

AI-Generated Content: Output created by AI systems.

Ethical Use: Responsible, transparent use that aligns with College’s values.

Hallucination: In the context of artificial intelligence, a hallucination refers to an AI model producing outputs that are inaccurate, nonsensical, or factually incorrect, despite appearing coherent and plausible.

Sharing/Distributing/Processing: Making content available, disseminating it, or using it for analysis or integration.

General Principles and Guidelines

  1. AI may not replace human oversight, critical thinking, decision making, and academic integrity.
  2. AI may not replace academic discourse.
  3. Human supervision and crosschecking of AI generated content is required to verify accuracy.
  4. AI use in content creation must be disclosed to constituents and stakeholders.
  5. Proper citation and attribution are required for all AI generated content.
  6. Such materials must comply with all intellectual property laws, regulations, and College rules.
  7. The use of confidential or otherwise sensitive data wiht AI tools is prohibited except as provided for in college procedure.
  8. Projects involving AI in research must undergo College established Institutional Review Board (IRB) review.
