When Orlando magazine invited readers to nominate inspiring women leaders, the response was overwhelming. Among the many remarkable stories, Dr. Georgia Lorenz, president of Seminole State College of Florida, stood out for her unwavering commitment to education, transformational leadership and deep community impact—making a meaningful difference in countless lives every day.
“Never forget that leadership is the art of helping people change who they’re thought to be to who they ought to be.”
This quote by John Maxwell resonates deeply with Dr. Lorenz. It’s a lesson instilled by her mentor, Jeff Shimizu—one she strives to pay forward in her leadership every day.
Georgia Lorenz stands out for her
leadership and community impact.
“At Seminole State, the faculty and staff provide a wraparound support network that helps our students realize what’s possible and equips them to achieve their dreams,” said Dr. Lorenz.
That same commitment to empowerment drives her community work, particularly with foster youth transitioning to independence through organizations like First Place for Youth and IMPOWER.
“I know firsthand the challenges that any 18- to 22-year-old college student faces,” Dr. Lorenz shares. “Now imagine facing those same challenges without a stable home or support system. That’s why I’m passionate about making an impact both at Seminole State and in the broader community.”
Dr. Lorenz proudly calls herself Seminole State’s “#1 cheerleader,” a role that reflects her passion, perseverance and a strong work ethic that traces back to her days as a synchronized swimmer.
“I wasn’t the most naturally talented swimmer on the team, but I could outwork anyone—and that mindset has served me well,” she says. “I bring that same drive and enthusiasm to Seminole State every day. Enthusiasm is contagious—it motivates others and helps us all succeed.”
Under her leadership, Seminole State has been named a Top 10 finalist for the 2025 Aspen Prize for Community College Excellence—a $1 million national award recognizing outstanding achievement among more than 1,000 community colleges across the U.S.
“Being ranked in the top 10 places Seminole State in the top 1% of colleges nationwide. This recognition is based on the outcomes that matter most to our students—teaching quality, student success, economic mobility, access and equity,” says Lorenz. “We’re incredibly proud to receive this honor.”
Dr. Lorenz has also spearheaded strategic partnerships and initiatives that increase access to education, especially for underserved communities, all while maintaining one of the lowest tuition rates in the nation. Her student-first approach has reinforced Seminole State’s role as both a workforce engine and a community partner.
She continues to lead with humility, vision, and impact—positioning Seminole State as a first-choice institution for academic excellence, career readiness and life-changing opportunities.
In every aspect of her work, Dr. Lorenz models how higher education can transform lives and strengthen communities. She is a data-informed, student-centered leader whose influence extends well beyond campus walls.
