The Seminole State Speaker Series will host its fifth and final event of the 2022-23 academic year on Thursday, March 30, with a presentation by Gene Baur, president and co-founder of Farm Sanctuary.

  • When: Thursday, March 30, 2023 at 7 p.m.
  • Where: Sanford/Lake Mary Campus Building C or watch live via streaming video
  • Topic: Farm Sanctuary: Changing Hearts and Minds about Animals and Food

Founded in 1986 to combat the abuses of factory farming, Farm Sanctuary advocates for institutional reforms, and encourages a new awareness and understanding of farm animals and the benefits of cruelty-free, plant-based living.

Hailed as the “conscience of the food movement” by TIME magazine, Baur will discuss his 35+ years working to combat factory farming and raise awareness about the impacts of our destructive food system. He will outline current issues and discuss ways to lighten our environmental footprint, attain better health and live as kindly as possible by making informed and conscientious food choices.

Gene is the author of Farm Sanctuary: Changing Hearts and Minds About Animals and Food (March 2008) and Living the Farm Sanctuary Life: The Ultimate Guide to Eating Mindfully, Living Longer, and Feeling Better Every Day (April 2015).

Gene was instrumental in passing the first U.S. laws prohibiting cruel farming practices and his work has been covered by major media organizations.  Gene has a bachelor’s degree in sociology from California State University, Northridge and a master’s degree in agricultural economics from Cornell University.

The presentation will include a Q&A session and book signing.
