Seminole State a platinum sponsor of Sanford MLK 2022 Celebration Weekend

Seminole State College of Florida is partnering with the Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Celebration Steering Committee to sponsor the City of Sanford’s MLK 2022 Celebration Weekend.

Several events will take place over the weekend of Jan. 14-17 including an oratorical contest, celebration banquet, interfaith service, and a parade followed by Festival in the Park at Fort Mellon Park on the shores of Lake Monroe in downtown Sanford.

MLK Oratorical Contest

Friday, Jan. 14, 6 - 7 p.m.
Seminole State College, Building C, Sanford/Lake Mary Campus

The contest is open to local high school seniors  who are required to write a speech applying one of Dr. King’s quotes below to a challenge our country is currently facing and conduct an oral presentation in front of a panel of local community.

Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. oratorical contest topics: 

  • “Where do we go from here.”
  • “The ultimate measure of a man is not where he stands in moments of comfort and convenience, but where he stands at times of challenge and controversy.”
  • “If I cannot do great things, I can do small things in a great way.”
  • "It is not possible to be in favor of justice for some people and not be in favor of justice for all people."

The Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Celebration Committee will award a $3,000 scholarship to the first, second and third place winners to attend Seminole State College.

The purpose of the Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Scholarship fund is to honor Dr. King’s accomplishments as well as encourage youth, through education and experience, to continue to strive to become productive citizens and give back to their communities through seeking higher education beyond high school.

Annual MLK Banquet

The 2022 Commemorative Banquet will be held at the Sanford Civic Center and feature Bishop Derek T. Triplett speaking.  College leaders including Seminole State President
Dr. Georgia L. Lorenz will attend the banquet.

MLK Interfaith Service

Sunday, Jan. 16, 3– 4 p.m.

The interfaith service will be held at St. Paul Missionary Baptist Church

MLK Parade & Festival in the Park

Monday, Jan. 17

MLK Interfaith Service

The parade will start at 10 a.m. at Crooms Academy of Information Technology High School, 2200 Historic Goldsboro Blvd. (formerly West 13th Street) and will proceed east to Holly Avenue. Seminole State students will be marching in the parade.

Festival in the Park will begin immediately following the parade on the event grounds at Ft. Mellon Park.
