RED2010 Foundations of Reading

This introductory course provides preservice and in-service teachers with a foundational understanding of the science of reading and the use of evidence-based, explicit, systematic, and sequential approaches to literacy instruction. Students learn how reading develops; how to teach oral language, phonological and phonemic awareness, phonics/decoding, vocabulary, fluency, and comprehension; and how to assess and monitor reading. The course emphasizes ways to recognize reading difficulties and select targeted, multisensory interventions, including those for students with characteristics of dyslexia, while also supporting teachers in creating literacy-rich environments across content areas, and using effective classroom management practices to promote strong reading outcomes for all learners.
