Stonewall 2018-19 Events

The Department of Humanities, History, and Modern Languages is facilitating a series of events throughout the 2018-19 academic year to commemorate the Stonewall Uprising. Please join us as we learn about and reflect on these historical events and the legacy of LGBTQ activism in Central Florida.

An Evening with the Orlando Gay Chorus

  • Sept.18 at 7:30 p.m.
  • Concert Hall (building G), Sanford/Lake Mary Campus
  • The evening's performance will be followed by a community discussion in honor of the 50th anniversary of the Stonewall Uprising.
  • This event is non-ticketed and is free and open to the public.

Come Out with Pride Orlando Parade

  • Oct. 13
  • Lake Eola, Downtown Orlando
  • Students from Unity and the Gay Straight Alliance will host a table at the annual Come Out with Pride event and parade.

Social Justice Week Diversity Workshop
"Progress Towards Social Justice for the LGBTQ Community"

Chasing Rainbows, Arts and Artifacts of the LGBTQ Community

  • Seminole State campus libraries and/or Read to Succeed QEP Centers
  • Curated items from different collections highlighting the history of the LGBTQ community in Florida will be on display throughout the month at each campus library. Sponsored and curated by the Read to Succeed QEP.

"Gross Indecency: The Three Trials of Oscar Wilde" by Moisés Kaufman

  • Feb. 8-9, 14-16, 2019 at 7:30 p.m. and Feb. 10, 17 at 2 p.m.
  • Harriett’s Theatre (building G), Sanford/Lake Mary Campus
  • Playwright Moises Kaufmann scores another hit with this docu-drama, which combines histories, memoirs, biographies and Wilde’s own writings with newspaper and tabloid articles of the day to transport audiences to the trial of the 19th century, a trial that ended with the conviction of the great man of letters for having a “Love that dare not speak its name.”

LGBT+ Safe Space Training

Seminole State Speaker Series presents Judy Shepard

  • March 27, 2019 at 7 p.m.
  • Concert Hall (building G), Sanford/Lake Mary Campus
  • Judy Shepard, human rights advocate, author and founding president of the Matthew Shepard Foundation, will present “The Legacy of Matthew Shepard” as part of the Seminole State College 2018-19 Speaker Series. This Speaker Series presentation will be co-sponsored by Addition Financial and a grant from the National Endowment for the Humanities. "The Importance of Being Earnest" by Oscar Wilde

  • April 5-6, 11-13, 2019 at 7:30 p.m. and April 7, 14 at 2 p.m.
  • Harriett’s Theatre (building G), Sanford/Lake Mary Campus
  • Oscar Wilde’s comic masterpiece was described by the London Telegraph as “the most perfect comedy in the English language.” Effervescent, the play sparkles with dazzling word play and hilariously unlikely situations. Oscar Wilde takes aim at the mores of Victorian society in a classic confection bejeweled with epigrams and bon mots guaranteed to delight.

From Shakespeare to RuPaul: The History of Drag

  • This multimedia lecture explores the history of Drag in entertainment throughout history and its evolution to the forefront of contemporary pop culture. The presentation will discuss the use of drag in both Eastern and Western entertainment. The presenter, Dan Jones, has taught a full semester course on Drag at UCF for the past 8 years.

Documenting LGBTQ History in Florida
