![]() English One of the keys to success in almost any domestic career is the ability to use the English language effectively. Students who pursue studies in creative writing, journalism and literature are prepared for careers as writers, poets, book editors, playwrights, public relations managers, journalists, media specialists, teachers, researchers and lawyers. Seminole State's English, creative writing, literature and journalism classes open many windows to communication in our global community. Through supportive faculty members, small classes and computer-assisted writing, students are offered many exciting opportunities for mastering the written word. The English Department offers scholarships to students who demonstrate excellence in English. Creative WritingThe English Department offers a variety of stimulating programs and its faculty provides an encouraging environment for future writers, novelists and poets. Tuesday Voices, an open reading of original poetry, sponsored by the English Department and the Gwendolyn Brooks Writers' Association of Florida Inc., meets the fourth Tuesday of every month on the Sanford/Lake Mary Campus, at local bookstores or at other venues. For students, the English Department sponsors the Open Doors Short Story Competition, as well as the Stephen Caldwell Wright Poetry Awards, and applicants from across the country enter the Thomas Burnett Swann Poetry Competition. Winners are given a cash prize and their selected poems are published in Revelry, a national publication sponsored by the Gwendolyn Brooks Writers' Association of Florida Inc. and Seminole State's English Department. LiteratureLiterature courses help students become critical thinkers through their exposure to the classics, contemporary works and a broad range of literary authors from diverse cultures. Small class sizes allow students to discuss literary works and criticism in a seminar-like atmosphere with experienced literature professors. JournalismStudents interested in journalism can hone their writing and reporting skills and develop a portfolio through their involvement with The Scribe, Seminole State's award-winning student newspaper. Students can also attend national conferences, earn tuition waivers for editing responsibilities and receive exceptional mentoring from faculty members with journalism experience.
