For the second time in the spring 2014 season, a Seminole State College of Florida player has earned statewide honors for on-field performance.
Thanks to his stellar offensive production on the diamond, freshman shortstop Edwin Bonilla was named the National Junior College Athletic Association (NJCAA) Region 8/Florida College System Activities Association (FCSAA) Baseball Player of the Week for Feb. 24-March 2.
Bonilla, originally from Kissimmee, had at least one hit in all four of the Raiders’ games last week, including back-to-back three-hit games Feb. 25 against Polk State College and Feb. 28 against St. Petersburg College. To go along with his .563 (9-of-16) batting average for the week, Bonilla contributed to 10 of the team’s 28 total runs, scoring eight while driving in two RBIs.
As a team, the Raiders (10-7-1) went 3-1 during last week’s games, including a 9-3 upset victory over St. Petersburg College, at the time ranked No. 8 in the nation. Seminole State scored an average of seven runs per game last week to build offensive momentum for the conference slate, which began March 5.
Bonilla is the first baseball player and the second Raider overall to be honored this spring by the FCSAA. Freshman softball pitcher Stephanie Adkins was named Pitcher of the Week for Feb. 10-16 on the strength of two complete-game victories and a seventh-inning save.
The Raiders will be back in action at home Saturday, March 8, to finish off a series against conference rival Santa Fe College.
All Raider home events are free to Seminole State students, faculty and staff with a valid Blue & Gold Card, the Seminole State ID. Admission is also available to the general public for a small fee.
