More than 3,000 degrees, certificates awarded this term

Seminole State held its Fall 2013 Commencement Ceremony Sunday, Dec. 15, in the CFE Arena at UCF.

Seminole State College of Florida awarded more than 3,000 degrees and certificates during the Fall 2013 Commencement Ceremony on Sunday, Dec. 15, in the CFE Arena at the University of Central Florida.

The ceremony also included the College's largest class of baccalaureate graduates. More than 100 four-year graduates were recognized, including the College's first graduates earning Bachelor of Science degrees in Information Systems Technology.

Graduates of all Seminole State programs participated. Among the graduates were:

  • Ten LPN graduates who helped save the life of their instructor when he suffered a heart attack while he worked with them during a clinical on Oct. 25. Instructor Carlos Montanez says the students jumped in like pros, asking him to lie down and even followed him home to make sure he made it there safely.
  • Lori Comstock and her son Keyan, who graduated with their high school diplomas. Lori Comstock says her son's success as a student inspired her to go back to school. Both are planning to transition toward a degree program at Seminole State.

  • Jason Gingras, who is among the first to earn his B.S. in Information Systems Technology. Gingras, 33, is the first in his family to earn a bachelor's degree. He says the flexibility of his classes made the difference for him. He took his entire coursework toward his B.S. online.

Randy Hanna, chancellor of the Florida College System, provided the keynote address, encouraging students to strive for excellence in all that they do.

"Play varsity; don't play junior varsity," Hanna said. "Do it to the best of your ability. Be the best that you can be." He also reminded them to thank those who helped them along the way.

"Never forget to say thank you as often as you can to those who have made a difference in your life," he said.
