Seminole State College is launching plans for a celebration nearly 50 years in the making by asking alumni, students and community members to “Share Your Memories” in advance of the College’s golden anniversary in 2015.
Seminole State is seeking assistance in gathering memorabilia and memories from the College’s five decades as Seminole Junior College (1965-75), Seminole Community College (1975-2009) and Seminole State College (2009-today).
“Nearly 1.1 million students and thousands of employees have passed through Seminole State’s doors since our founding in 1965,” says Michael Garlich, co-chair of the College’s 50th Anniversary Steering Committee. “Over the next several months, we’re asking everyone to share memories and unique stories to help us chronicle the College’s rich history and contributions to Central Florida.”
A “Share Your Memories” form is available at www.seminolestate.edu/50, for students, alumni and local residents to share their recollections as well as ideas on the best ways for the College to celebrate its 50th anniversary. The form should be submitted by Aug. 15. Later this year, the Steering Committee plans to set up times when retirees, alumni and community supporters can be interviewed or recorded to share their oral histories.
The College is also seeking the donation or loan of school-related memorabilia from the 1960’s through today, Garlich says.
“Look in your closets and your personal records for historical memorabilia or photos from your time at the College,” Garlich says. Items collected will be used as part of an online archive project and also for displays during the 50th anniversary. Items also can be permanently donated to the College Archives, a climate-controlled area housed in the Sanford/Lake Mary Campus Library.
The College plans to officially launch its 50th anniversary celebration in January 2015. A collegewide celebration is planned for June 4, 2015, to mark the day Gov. W. Haydon Burns signed the bill that created Seminole Junior College.
