GED test moving to online-only format in January

In January 2014, the GED test will be available only online, and students who did not finish it in 2013 must take the new GED exam.

Seminole State College of Florida will transition to a computer-based only GED test starting in January 2014.

In July 2012, the state Department of Education announced plans to eliminate the use of the paper-based GED test, making the computer-based exam mandatory as of January 2014.

Through this year, students testing at Seminole State can choose either the paper or the computer-based test.

To prepare students for the change, Seminole State's Assessment and Testing Office, the only GED testing center for Seminole County, has prepared this list of frequently asked questions:

What are the benefits of the computer-based test?

The new computer-based test offers students unofficial results immediately. Students also can register and schedule the test at any time online through the GED testing site.

What are the differences between the two versions?

Both tests have the same material. However, the computer-based test costs $130 while the paper-based test costs $70.

I need to retake part of the paper-based GED test. What should I do?

Students who need to retake parts of the paper-based GED test should register now to complete the test by December. In January 2014, all GED tests will be computer-based, and students who did not finish will need to retake the entire five-part examination.

When can I retake the paper-based test?

Assessment and Testing offers GED retake registration monthly at the Sanford/Lake Mary Campus only.

Is help available to prepare for the GED test?

Seminole State's School of Academic Foundations offers year-round GED test-prep classes at the Altamonte Springs, Oviedo and Sanford/Lake Mary campuses, as well as at Harvest Time International, 225 N. Kennel Road, Sanford. For a complete schedule of classes, please visit the Adult Education website.

GED prep tuition for Florida residents is $30 per term, regardless of how many courses are taken.

For more information on registering to retake the paper-based GED test, call Assessment and Testing at 407.708.2020.
