Student turns design passion into career

Adrienne Nunez Craddock presents at the Green Expo on April 4, 2013.

Seminole State student Adrienne Nunez Craddock’s passion for interior design has been a lifelong affair. It started when she was just a child and her parents took her to visit model homes for ideas on how to spruce up their own house.

Now the 23-year-old is turning her passion into a career. She’s working toward a bachelor’s degree in interior design, and as an environmental advocate, hopes to pursue a career that combines the best of both worlds.

“I want to design houses in residential communities and make sure they have little to no impact on the environment,” Craddock explains. “It makes so much more sense to build things sustainably so they benefit future generations.”

When she finishes at Seminole State, Craddock plans to continue her education and earn a master’s degree in sustainability. She already has a jumpstart in the industry, serving as the president of the U.S. Green Building Council Seminole State Chapter, and also as a student member of the American Society of Interior Designers (ASID), International Interior Design Association (IIDA) and Commercial Real Estate Women (CREW) Orlando Network.

“It is very important to start networking as soon as you’re able to, so people can see what you’re achieving as a student and what you can offer them even before you’re in the professional field,” Craddock says.

Her involvement on campus doesn’t end there. She has also served as the Heathrow Campus SGA founding secretary and treasurer as well as the Environmental Club president, and was in the Honors Institute while earning her A.A. degree.

Craddock says she used to be anything but outgoing, but it wasn’t until getting involved in clubs and organizations that she truly broke out of her shell.

“My advice to new students is you need to be willing to put yourself out there and get to know people,” Craddock says. “Be an active participant.”
