Seminole State recognizes 2013 student writers

The English Department at Seminole State College of Florida recognized the winners of three student writing competitions during a ceremony on Wednesday, April 4.

Professor Webb Harris announced the winners of the Research Paper Competition:

  • English I winner: Sarah Smith, of Chuluota, first place
  • English II winners: Victoria DiPaolo, of Oviedo, first place; Trina Dziewior, of Oviedo, second place

All three Research Paper Competition winners will receive a cash prize plus a three-credit scholarship.

Harris also announced the first-, second- and third-place winners of “Veritas,” Seminole State’s short-fiction competition.

  • First place:  Matthew Holman, of Sorrento, for “A Windmill”
  • Second place: Jillian Jones, of Orlando, for “Still Sleeping”
  • Third place: Michelle Semel, of Longwood, for “Magnolia”

The Dr. Stephen Caldwell Wright Poetry Awards went to three students. “Swoon Me on the Deep,” by Anna Kimball, of Oviedo, was the winning poem. Honorable mentions went to Monica M. Webb, of Heathrow, for “of my lover’s arms,” and Michelle Semel, for “Ouija.”

The poetry awards honor Dr. Wright, a longtime English instructor at Seminole State.
