Disability Awareness Month events aim to foster inclusion, understanding

October is National Disability Awareness Month, and the Disability Support Services (DSS) Office at Seminole State College of Florida will be hosting several events designed to foster inclusion and increase understanding surrounding the needs and contributions of individuals with all types of disabilities.

An exhibit highlighting accessibility by design and color will kick off Seminole State’s Disability Awareness Month events. The exhibit will showcase projects done by some of the College’s interior design students and will be displayed in the Atrium at the College’s Heathrow Campus Oct. 9 -25, during regular campus hours.

“Disability Awareness Month is an opportunity for the entire college community to understand the learning differences, challenges and barriers that we sometimes face in our day to day life,” says Dr. Geraldine Perez, director of Disability Support Services at Seminole State. “The more we understand the different abilities of each individual and strive to make learning environments more accessible for all, the better our students will perform.”

The awareness activities are intended to be fun for all students and allow others to see how one may feel living with a disability. Students will also receive information on the different resources at the county, state and national level that help individuals with disabilities demonstrate their abilities and integrate fully into society.

At the Assistive Technology and Service Provider Fair being held on the Sanford/Lake Mary Campus, several companies will showcase the latest in technology available to help those with a disability. In addition, local organizations that provide specific disability-related services will also participate and provide detailed information on services they offer.

“We live in a world where every individual has a unique way of learning, doing things and understanding their surroundings,” says Perez. “Our College prides itself on being an inclusive and welcoming community where everyone can feel secure.”

As part of the Disability Awareness Month event planning, a poster competition was held. The competition was open to all current Seminole State students. Upon careful review of all entries, the DSS office selected Heathrow SGA President Elizabeth Prokes, as this year’s winner of a $50.00 scholarship.
