Seminole State to hold events to support Disability Awareness Month

October is Disability Awareness Month, and the Disability Support Services (DSS) office at Seminole State College will be hosting several events on different campuses, designed to increase understanding and foster inclusion.

During the "Walk a Mile in Their Shoes" events, students will be able to feel what it’s like to live with a disability.  This event is intended to be a fun environment where all students are welcome to attend, play games and enjoy free food.

At the Assistive Technology and Service Provider Fair being held on the Sanford/Lake Mary Campus, several companies will showcase the latest in technology available to help those with a disability. In addition, local service providers will be on campus providing information on the services they offer.

“Disability Awareness month is an opportunity to rethink and understand the different abilities we all have and live with,” said Dr. Geraldine Perez, director of Disability Support Services. “This event will accentuate each person’s unique abilities and collaborate to reach the common goal of success in life. Let’s all celebrate who we are without barriers.”

As part of the event planning, a poster competition, “Disability is Diversity” was held. The competition was open to all current Seminole State students. This year, faculty member Mike Kapper, decided to make the contest an assignment in his Digital Media class. Upon careful review of all entries, the DSS office selected student, Annalese Harris, as this year’s winner of a $50.00 scholarship. All Seminole State students will once again be encouraged to submit their poster designs in the Spring 2018 competition.
