The Legal Affairs Office, through the General Counsel, provides legal advice and representation for the Board of Trustees, the President and College administration and staff. In addition, the General Counsel manages and coordinates all legal service providers including outside counsel retained by the College to handle individual matters.

The General Counsel provides legal advice to College administration and staff on any subject matters as such relates to the College's governance and operations. These consulting services include assistance in the negotiation and preparation of contracts and other documents. He also acts as the College's advocate in State and federal courts as well as before administrative and regulatory agencies.

The Director of Policy and Labor Relations facilitates the rule making process for the College which governs the development, revision and repeal, where appropriate, of College policies and procedures. She furthermore assists College staff with compliance with Florida's record retention requirements and facilitates staff response to public records requests. In the area of labor relations, she supports the College's Chief Negotiator by assisting with research and analysis as well as crafting contract language.

The Legal Affairs Office also utilizes a paralegal intern from SSC's Legal Studies Program. The paralegal interns are hired in conjunction with SSC's Career Development Center and upon registration in the internship course. Paralegal interns are supervised by the General Counsel. They provide assistance with contract review as well as research support and other tasks as assigned by the General Counsel.
