Awards Related to Equity and Diversity, 2014-20

Seminole State College has been recognized by national, state, and local organizations for involvement in effective equity and diversity programs. Examples:

2020

  • 2020 Advancing Diversity national award, presented to the College by the American Association of Community Colleges from among four national finalists.
  • 2020 Association of Community College Trustees Equity Award, Southern Region winner.
  • 2020 Higher Education Excellence in Diversity award, presented to the College by INSIGHT Into Diversity magazine.

2019

  • 2019 Higher Education Excellence in Diversity award, presented to the College by INSIGHT Into Diversity magazine.
  • 2019 honoree in the Diversity and Inclusion category at the Association of Fundraising Professionals Central Florida Chapter's National Philanthropy Day awards.
  • 2019 Advancing Diversity award finalist (one of three nationally), presented to the College by the American Association of Community Colleges. This is the College’s third consecutive year as an AACC Advancing Diversity finalist.

2018

  • 2018 Higher Education Excellence in Diversity award, presented to the College by INSIGHT Into Diversity magazine.
  • 2018 Advancing Diversity award finalist (one of five nationally), presented to the College by the American Association of Community Colleges. This is the College’s second consecutive year as an AACC Advancing Diversity finalist.
  • 2018 Alumni Award winner (one of three), presented to Orlando City Commissioner Patty Sheehan by the American Association of Community Colleges. Commissioner Sheehan led the City’s response to the Pulse shootings in Orlando, June 2017, and continues to unite the LGBTQ community with observances and revitalization of the nearby business community.
  • 2018 College/Community Partnership award finalist (one of four nationally), presented to the College by the American Association of Community Colleges. The College has forged a valuable partnership with Heart of Florida United Way and SunTrust Foundation to offer “Destination Graduation,” a program supporting low-income students by assisting with emergency funding, a food pantry, and community resources. 

2017

  • 2017 Higher Education Excellence in Diversity award, presented to the College by INSIGHT into Diversity magazine.
  • 2017 inclusion in national Research Brief, “Top 11 Colleges and Universities for representing and paying female and minority administrators equitably for more than a decade.” Presented to the College by the College and University Professional Association – Human Resources. A colleague from Human Resources represented the College on a discussion panel at the national conference in September 2017.
  • 2017 Advancing Diversity award finalist (one of four), presented to the College by the American Association of Community Colleges.
  • Nomination for 2017 Corporate Procurement Group of the Year award (“Supplier Diversity Traveling Cup"), offered by the Hispanic Chamber of Commerce of Metro Orlando.
  • 2017 National Community College Hispanic Council Leadership Fellows program, selecting Andrea Velez.
  • 2017 Don Quijote Award, “Community Champion,” presented to Dr. E. Ann McGee by the Hispanic Chamber of Commerce of Metro Orlando.

2016

  • 2016 Higher Education Excellence in Diversity award, presented to the College by INSIGHT into Diversity magazine.
  • 2016 Multicultural Leadership Award, presented to Janet Balanoff by the Florida Diversity Council.
  • 2016 National Community College Hispanic Council Leadership Fellows program, selecting Angela Adame-Smith.
  • 2016 Corporate Champion of Change award, presented to the College by The Beacon Network of Central Florida.
  • 2016 Community Gem award, presented to Dr. E. Ann McGee by the Hispanic Chamber of Commerce of Metro Orlando.

2015

  • Emerging “Hispanic Serving Institution” designation, earned by the College in 2015 from the federal government for Hispanic student enrollment in college credit program approaching 25%.
  • 2015 Higher Education Excellence in Diversity award, presented to the College by INSIGHT into Diversity magazine.
  • 2015 Humanitarian award, presented to Janet Balanoff by VITAS Healthcare and NoLimit Health and Education, Inc.
  • 2015 One Hundred Inspiring Women in STEM award, presented to Dr. Maya Byfield by INSIGHT into Diversity magazine.
