The General Education Development (GED) Exam

The GED exam determines whether your skills match those of a typical high school graduate. Skills are assessed in:

  • Language arts writing
  • Mathematics
  • Language arts reading
  • Social studies
  • Science

Who Should Take the GED Exam?

You should take the GED exam if you are 18 years of age or older and need a high school diploma. If you are under the age of 18 and live in Seminole County, you must attend underage GED classes before you may take the GED exam. If you pass all five subtests, you will receive a state of Florida high school diploma from the Florida State Department of Education.

What Does the Exam Content Consist of?

The GED exam is made up of five subtests:

  • Four multiple choice subtests
  • One part-essay, part-multiple choice subtest

What Requirements Must I Meet Before I Can Take the GED Exam?

To take the GED exam, you must:

  • Be at least 18 years old. If you are not 18, you must complete the required underage GED classes.
  • Present a valid driver's license or state of Florida identification card as well as a valid social security card for verification purposes.
  • Pay the $70 exam fee (payment can be made at Student Services on the Sanford/Lake Mary Campus, Building A, Room A-107).

Note: The application fee is due at the time of registration. Payments are valid for 60 days from the date they are submitted. The GED rescheduling fee is $10.

What Must I Do If I Need to Take the GED Exam?

You can register for the GED exam by attending one of the registration and orientation sessions listed at the bottom of the page. The sessions are approximately two hours in length. You must bring a valid Florida driver's license or identification card as well as a valid social security card for verification.

Note: Guests are not permitted at orientation and/or testing sessions.

What Must I Do If I Need to Retake the GED Exam?

You must make an appointment to retake the GED exam. Your exam is considered a retake if you: 

  • Are re-attempting one or more GED subtests.
  • Did not attend your scheduled testing date (appointment must be made within one year of the scheduled test date).
  • Cannot register for the exam before payment is due.
  • Took an individual portion of the GED exam and need to complete the remaining subtests.

How Long Does It Take to Receive My Test Scores?

GED exam scores take approximately eight weeks to process. Test results will not be disclosed via phone, fax or e-mail for any reason.

2009 GED Registration and Orientation Sessions

Registration and orientation sessions are for first-time registrants only. Please do not bring any guests.

Prior to your GED registration and orientation session(s), you must report to Student Services on the Sanford/Lake Mary Campus (Building A, Room A-107) to pay the GED testing fee(s). Your payment receipt must be presented at the session(s) before you can participate.

Orientation sessions and the GED exam will be held in the Sanford/Lake Mary Campus Adult Education Building (Building B) on the following dates:
