Did you know...

First-Time-in-College Students

If this is your first time in college and you are entering Seminole State in a college-credit program, you are required to take the ACT, SAT, ACCUPLACER (CPT) or PERT exam. Your test scores will be used to:

• Meet state testing requirements.
• Determine whether you are eligible to enroll in certain academic courses. Florida law and general College practice require students to achieve minimum test scores before registering for some classes.

Your scores do not affect your:

• Admission to Seminole State.
• Selection of a major.
• Ability to transfer to a four-year college or university after completing your degree at Seminole State.

If you have additional questions about your test scores and their effect on your first-term course selection, please inquire with a College counselor during your First-Time-in-College (FTIC) Group Advisement session.

ACT

If you have already taken the ACT exam:

• You are responsible for making sure Seminole State has received your ACT scores before you register for classes.
• Your scores must be current (less than two years old) to meet state requirements.
• You must achieve a score of 17 or higher on the English subtest as well as a score of 18 or higher on the reading subtest to enroll in:
  1. English I and English II
  2. Humanities courses
  3. Social Science courses
  4. History courses
  5. General Biology
  
  

  Please note: Higher math scores and additional math course work may allow you to enroll in higher level math courses such as College Algebra and Precalculus.

If you do not meet these requirements, you must:

• Complete one or two semesters of developmental course work before entering college-credit courses; or
• Take the PERT exam and achieve acceptable scores to eliminate the need for developmental course work.

If you have not taken the ACT exam or provided placement test scores to Seminole State, you:

• Cannot register for your first semester of classes.
• Must retake the ACT or complete the PERT to meet state requirements.

Seminole State offers the ACT four times per year.

The PERT can be taken at the Assessment and Testing Center on any Seminole State campus.

SAT

If you have already taken the SAT exam:

• You are responsible for making sure Seminole State has received your SAT scores before you register for classes.
• Your scores must be current (less than two years old) to meet state requirements.
• You must achieve a score of 440 or higher on the verbal section to enroll in:
  1. English I and English II
  2. Humanities courses
  3. Social Science courses
  4. History courses
  5. General Biology
• You must achieve a score of 440 or higher in math as well as a letter grade of "A" or "B" in Algebra II or its equivalent to enroll in:
  1. Intermediate Algebra for college credit

  Please note: Higher math scores and additional math course work may allow you to enroll in higher level math courses such as College Algebra and Precalculus.

If you do not meet these requirements, you must:

• Complete one or two semesters of developmental course work before entering college-credit courses; or
• Take the PERT exam and achieve acceptable scores to eliminate the need for developmental course work.
• Complete required EAP courses (note: courses must be completed prior to entering English I and/or any Gordon Rule course.

If you have not taken the SAT exam or provided placement test scores to Seminole State, you:

• Cannot register for your first semester of classes.
• Must retake the SAT or complete the PERT to meet state requirements.

Seminole State students may take the PERT at the Assessment and Testing Office on any Seminole State campus.
