The College-Level Academic Skills (CLAS) Requirements

Notice: The state of Florida Legislature repealed the requirement to pass the College-Level Academic Skills Test (CLAST) in order to be awarded an Associate in Arts degree, effective July 1, 2009. However, the College Level Academic Skills (CLAS) requirements remain in effect. The CLAST is now called the CLAS requirements.

The following conditions related to College-Level Academic Skills (CLAS) requirements were made by the Articulation Coordinating Committee (ACC) on Aug. 13, 2009, and remain in effect:

  1. Meeting CLAS requirements through assessment testing

The SAT, ACT and CPT examinations can be used to meet CLAS requirements. Please refer to the table below for scoring guidelines.

All General Education Requirements in humanities, social science and history are designated as Gordon Rule courses at Seminole State.

  3. Course options for meeting the CLAS Computation Skills requirement (math)

A student must earn a 2.5 GPA in any two of the following courses:

    • Any General Education MAC course (with the exception of MAC 1990-1995) in which the last three digits of the course number are 102 or higher (examples: MAC 2311, MAC 2312, MAC 2313, MAC 1105, MAC 1105H, MAC 1996, MAC 1997, MAC 1998 and MAC 1999)

    • Any Gordon Rule statistics course (STA 2023)
  4. Meeting CLAS requirements through credit-by-examination

    • If a student earns credit in two college courses within the same subject area (for example, two English courses, two Gordon Rule courses or two designated math courses) via ACC-approved* credit-by-examination (includes AP, IB, AICE, CLEP, DSST and Excelsior), the CLAS requirements for that subject area will be considered met.
    • If a student earns credit for one college course via ACC-approved credit-by-examination, no grade will be assigned for that course. To meet the CLAS requirements, the student must earn a 2.5 GPA or higher (at Seminole State, a letter grade of "B" or better) in the second course.

      * Note: The Articulation Coordinating Committee is a state-governed body. A list of approved credit-by-examinations can be found on the FACTS.org Web site.

  5. Transcript Codes

    • Students who use one of the ACC-approved options outlined above for meeting the CLAS requirements (for example, earning a 2.5 GPA in approved courses, or achieving an appropriate score on an approved assessment test) will have the code "995" recorded on their transcripts.
    • Students who receive a CLAS requirements waiver* will have the code "999" recorded on their transcripts, along with a statement indicating that a waiver has been granted.

      * Note: Students should request a CLAS waiver from their academic adviser or the Assessment and Testing Office if, for any reason, they cannot meet the CLAS requirements (examples: disability, language barrier, etc.).
