Teacher Recertification

Seminole State offers courses specifically designed to meet the requirements of teachers seeking recertification. These courses are offered in a variety of formats, including traditional day, evening and weekend classes; hybrid (80 percent online); and classes that are fully online.

Students must work with Seminole State Student Success Services counselors, advisers or specialists, in combination with the Florida Department of Education and their school district personnel, to ensure they have selected the appropriate courses for each certification specialization.

Spring 2009 Course Offerings

Introduction to the Teaching Profession (EDF 2005)
This course is designed to introduce students to the philosophical, historical and social foundations of education. The course also provides students with the opportunity to examine current educational issues and to explore education as a career.

Introduction to Diversity for Educators (EDF 2085)
This course introduces teachers to the issues, challenges and opportunities of teaching students who reflect the diversity of the American population in terms of race, ethnicity, religion, culture, sexual orientation and gender. Topics emphasized include foundations of prejudice, elements of culture and the values of diversity.

Educational Psychology (EDP 2002)
This course is an introduction to the principles and theories of psychology as applied to the process of education. Topics of study include psychological perspectives of education, learning theory and critical evaluation of the psychology of education.

Elementary School Mathematics (MAE 2801)
This course is a thorough treatment of mathematics appropriate for the elementary school teacher. It includes the study of the six basic sets of numbers, mathematical concepts such as operations and sets, learning sequences, algorithms, problem-solving techniques, error patterns, number systems and geometry. The topics will be taught from the viewpoint of a child through modeling.

Selected Studies: Instructional Strategies (EDF 2930)
This course prepares the participant to become proficient in the application of a variety of instructional strategies based on knowledge of learning styles, collaborative grouping activities, accommodations for exceptional students and to develop effective lesson plans that infuse technology.

Introduction to Technology for Educators (EME 2040)
Application of instructional design principles for the use of technology to enhance the quality of teaching and learning in the classroom. The course includes hands-on experience with educational media, emerging technologies and hardware, software and peripheral for the personal computer as well as data-driven decision-making processes.

Professional Test Prep Courses
These course will help prepare current and future educators to pass the General Knowledge Test.
