Registered Nurse

Registered Nurses (RNs) work toward:

  • Promoting health.
  • Preventing disease.
  • Helping patients cope with illness.

RNs provide care to patients, and to do so, they must:

  • Observe, assess and record patients' symptoms, reactions and progress.
  • Help physicians perform examinations and administer treatments.
  • Administer medications.
  • Assist physicians and therapists with convalescence and rehabilitation.

Being an RN requires more than patient care. RNs assume a leadership role with other nurses, medical assistants and other medical staff. They may also:

  • Develop and manage nursing care plans.
  • Instruct patients and their families in proper care.
  • Help individuals and groups improve or maintain their health.
  • Educate the community about health conditions or issues.
  • Supervise and train other nurses and medical assistants.
  • Perform basic lab or office duties.
