Save the date for Foundation’s 30th annual Dream Gala

Dream Gala founders Dede Schaffner and Art Grindle share a dance at the Dream Auction (now the Dream Gala) in 2006.

Mark your calendars for the Foundation for Seminole State College’s 30th annual Dream Gala, on Saturday, Feb. 15, 2014, at the Orlando Marriott Lake Mary.

The 2014 black-tie gala, themed “30 Rocks,” will feature a formal dinner, entertainment, live and silent auctions and a car raffle. The Dream Gala will begin at 5:30 p.m. with registration and a reception. Dinner and entertainment will follow.

The auction items will include luxury vacations, fine-dining packages, tickets to major sporting events and more. Up for grabs in a raffle is a 2014 Ford Escape, donated by the Central Florida Auto Dealers Association, Inc. Raffle tickets are $50 for one or $200 for five. To purchase tickets, visit dream-gala.com. Even if you’re unable to attend the Dream Gala, you can still win the grand prize raffle.

First held in 1984 as the Dream Auction, The Dream Gala was started by Dede Schaffner, Seminole County School Board member and former Seminole State trustee who serves on the Foundation’s Board of Directors, her late husband, Bill, and the late Art Grindle, whose $1 million donation in 2006 created Seminole State’s Art and Phyllis Grindle Honors Institute.

“I was trying to raise some dollars for some students to attend the college,” Schaffner said. “We were asking people to give checks to establish some scholarships. Art said, ‘Dede, you’re going about this all the wrong way. We need to have some kind of an event.’ Then, we began talking about it, and what we wanted to do. That’s where the Dream Auction came from.”

The Dream Gala is the Foundation’s biggest fundraiser with more than $2.8 million raised to date for the College and its students. All proceeds from the event benefit Seminole State student scholarships, faculty programs and the College’s areas of greatest need.

With $270,000 raised at last year’s gala, The Foundation hopes to continue its success at the 2014 Dream Gala.
