Fine arts announces 2013-14 season

'Tea Ceremony' by Ming Zhou

The Fine Arts Department at Seminole State College of Florida will kick off its 2013-14 cultural arts season with a theater production of the Greek comedy “Lysistrata,” a gallery exhibit displaying the works of Winter Park photographer Rick Lang, and a series of faculty music recitals.

Art

Seminole State’s Fine Arts Gallery will feature artists who work in an array of media, including photography, paintings and drawings.

The gallery season opens Aug. 28 with photos by Lang, a longtime teacher and administrator at Crealde School of Art who passed away in July. The photos were taken by Rick Lang as he traveled throughout the Southeast. Other artists featured this season are Ming Zhou, a native of China; Jessica Burke, an assistant professor of art at Georgia Southern University; and photographer Gene Hallander.

The annual Fine Arts Faculty Exhibit in November-December and the Juried Student Art Exhibit in April will give the community an opportunity to explore works by longtime professional artists and to discover new talent.

The College’s Fine Arts Gallery (building G on the Sanford/Lake Mary Campus) is open Monday through Thursday from 9:30 a.m.-3:30 p.m. and also during music and theater performances. For more information, please call 407.708.2040. All gallery exhibits are free and open to the public.

Theater

The Fine Arts Theatre’s season opens Oct. 4 with Seminole State Professor Bobbie Bell’s adaption of Aristophanes’ classic comedy “Lysistrata.” The theater also will again feature the work of Pulitzer prize-winning playwright August Wilson. “Gem of the Ocean,” set in 1900, is the ninth in Wilson’s “Pittsburgh Cycle” chronicling the African-American experience in the 20th century. The College was a 2013 national finalist for the American Association of Community Colleges Advancing Diversity Award for bringing the 10-play cycle to Central Florida.

Other highlights of the season include the comic strip musical “You’re a Good Man, Charlie Brown,” Timothy Mooney’s one-man “Lot o’ Shakespeare,” A.R. Gurney’s comedy of manners “The Dining Room” and the annual production of “Spring into Dance.”

Ticket Information: Reservations are strongly recommended and can be made by calling 407.708.2040 or visiting the Fine Arts Theatre Box Office (building G on the Sanford/Lake Mary Campus). The Box Office is open Mondays from 9 a.m.-noon, and Tuesdays through Fridays from noon-4 p.m.

Music

This season will highlight Seminole State’s music faculty with a series of recitals featuring voice performances, woodwinds, brass and percussion. The first recital is Tuesday, Sept. 24, at 7:30 p.m.

Student recitals also will feature prominently on the schedule this year, with three in November, two in March and one in April.

The ArtsMatters Fine Arts Forum, scheduled for October, November, March and April, will cover a range of topics, including Native American music, Caribbean and Brazilian music, and will feature an English Baroque ensemble.

Students from area middle schools, high schools and colleges are invited to perform on their instruments, attend workshops and view performances by clinicians and fellow students in October and April. The public is invited to attend all sessions.

This year’s Encore! Concert Series opens with the Emerald Trio on Oct. 8. Other highlights include the Holiday Gala Concert on Dec. 10 with performances by members of the Orlando Philharmonic Orchestra and Irish music by Justin Murphy on Jan. 28.

Concerts are free and open to the public. They’re held in the Sanford/Lake Mary Campus Concert Hall (building G). For more information, please call 407.708.2040.
