Featured StorySchaffner addresses graduatesWednesday, Jan 6, 2010 Loraine O'Connell Dede Schaffner, the 2009 Distinguished Alumna for Seminole State College of Florida, spoke at the Dec. 18 graduation. Nearly 1,200 students graduated in the first ceremony since the College changed its name on Sept. 21.
Schaffner, who is a member of the Seminole County School Board, served as chairman of the college's board from 1999-2001 and is also on the board of directors for the Foundation for Seminole State College.
A respected advocate of public education, Schaffner is also a Seminole State alumna. In 1984 she and her late husband, Bill, started the first Dream Auction, the Foundation?s biggest fund-raiser. The auction, now known as the Dream Gala, has generated more than $1.5 million to help students pay for their education.
Most recently, Schaffner was named the recipient of the 2009 Southern Regional Trustee Leadership Award by the Association of Community College Trustees.
