Seminole State to offer $10K bachelor's degree

Seminole State is one of seven colleges in Florida set to offer a bachelor's degree for $10,000.

Seminole State College of Florida will begin offering one of its five bachelor’s degrees at a cost of $10,000 as part of a pilot program that was announced on Monday, Nov. 26, by Florida Gov. Rick Scott.

“Seminole State is pleased to participate in the governor’s challenge by proposing a pilot program for a $10,000 bachelor’s degree in construction,” said Seminole State President Dr. E. Ann McGee. “We are committed to providing affordable access to students seeking bachelor’s degrees that support workforce needs throughout Florida.”

McGee said the construction degree was chosen because it was in a high-demand, high-paying profession and also because it is the only one of its kind in the region. The four-year degree, which has been offered since January 2011, leads to professional licensure as a general contractor. The $10,000 degree will be available to new students as early as August 2013.

The construction degree is based on the model set by the American Council for Construction Education (ACCE).

Seminole State College, which offers five bachelor’s degrees, is one of seven colleges in Florida participating in the pilot program.

“Florida must be focused on affordability in higher education,” said Randy Hanna, chancellor of the Florida College System. “The efforts of our colleges to work to produce baccalaureate degrees at a lower cost should provide a major benefit to our students and help meet Florida’s workforce needs.”

More details about the program will be announced soon.
