New Directions: Displaced Homemaker Program

Empower Yourself through Education and Training.

New Directions is a state grant-funded program that is sponsored by the Agency for Workforce Innovation. The goal of this program is to assist displaced homemakers, or single parents who attend Seminole State College, so they can achieve independence, economic security and self-sufficiency.

Women This program offers qualified students assistance with tuition, books, childcare stipends, uniforms, equipment, educational program-related expenses and consideration for emergency assistance.

New Directions can empower students to:
  • Establish their independence.
  • Build their self-confidence.
  • Become self-sufficient.
  • Become economically secure.
  • Transition from one role to another.
  • Enter the job market confidently and competitively.

Who Qualifies for the New Directions Program?

1. Displaced Homemakers: To be considered for assistance, applicants must meet the indicated criteria and provide proof that they:

  • Are at least 35 years old.
  • Have worked in a home, providing unpaid household services for family members.
  • Are not adequately employed or earning a self-sufficient income.
  • Have had or would have difficulty in securing adequate employment.
  • Have been dependent on the income of another family member but are no longer supported by such income.
  • Have been dependent on federal assistance.
2. Single Parents: To be considered for assistance, applicants must provide proof that they have custody of at least one child, of their marital status and educational background, and meet the following criteria:
  • Applicants must be between the ages of 17 and 34.
  • Applicants must seek a degree/certificate in a non-traditional career for their gender.
