New Directions: Displaced Homemaker Program

Empower yourself through education and training.

New Directions is a grant-funded state program sponsored by the Florida Department of Economic Opportunity (DEO). The program provides assistance to displaced homemakers and single parents who attend Seminole State College so they can achieve independence, economic security and self-sufficiency.

Women New Directions offers qualified students assistance with tuition, books, childcare stipends, uniforms, equipment, educational program-related expenses and consideration for emergency assistance.

The program can empower students to:

  • Establish their independence.
  • Build their self-confidence.
  • Become self-sufficient.
  • Become economically secure.
  • Transition from one role to another.
  • Enter the job market confidently and competitively.

Who Qualifies for the Program?

The New Directions Program is open to displaced homemakers and single parents who meet certain eligibility requirements.

Displaced Homemakers

To be considered for assistance, applicants must meet the indicated criteria and provide proof that they:

  • Are at least 35 years old.
  • Have worked in a home providing unpaid household services to family members.
  • Are not adequately employed or earning a self-sufficient income.
  • Have had or would have difficulty securing adequate employment.
  • Have been dependent on the income of another family member but are no longer supported by such income.
  • Have been dependent on federal assistance.
Single Parents

To be considered for assistance, applicants must provide proof of their marital status and educational background as well as proof that they have custody of at least one child. They also must:

  • Be between the ages of 18 and 34.
  • Seek a degree or certificate in a non-traditional career for their gender.
