Name Our College

SCC is now Seminole State College of Florida. Thanks to everyone who participated in this name change process. Between Aug. 3 and Sept. 1, 2009, the College received 3,422 suggestions for a new name through an online submission form.

During the month of September, the Name Review Committee narrowed down the list of potential names, and we again asked for your help.

On Sept. 21, the College's District Board of Trustees unanimously voted to change SCC's name to Seminole State College of Florida.

Why a name change:

  • State legislation has changed the Florida Community College System to the Florida College System.
  • This legislation gives each college the opportunity to change its name, particularly as it relates to expanding the college mission to include baccalaureate degrees that serve community demand.
  • Seminole State will begin offering a baccalaureate degree in January 2010; other baccalaureate degrees are also being explored.
  • The massive renovation of the Sanford/Lake Mary Campus requires significant, extensive new permanent signage, which would be cost-prohibitive to change in the future.
  • Surveys of current students indicate that a majority prefer a name change with a "state college" designation.
