The Health Information/Medical Transcription Program is an Applied Technology Diploma 37 college credits in length. Upon completing the program, graduates have the technical skills and medical science background that enables them to work as entry-level acute-care medical transcriptionists in hospitals, transcription services and physicians' offices. Medical transcription skills are honed with practice on actual physician dictation. Advanced transcription skills in medical style and grammar and industry-specific technology are emphasized.
The knowledge gained in this program prepares graduates to take the Registered Medical Transcriptionist exam offered by the Association for Healthcare Documentation Integrity (AHDI). This program is approved by the Approval Committee for Certificate Programs (ACCP), a joint committee established by AHDI and the American Health Information Management Association (AHIMA) for certifying and approving medical transcription and medical coding education programs, (visit www.ahdionline.org for details.) The program follows AHDI's Model Curriculum. The prerequisite courses HSC 1531 and HIM 1453 require minimum test scores prior to registration. The Health Information Management/Medical Transcription program has restricted access.
Candidates must apply and be accepted to Seminole State College. To begin major courses, students must be eligible for English I (ENC1101) or have completed ENC 1101.

Basic word structure and formation, medical terms, abbreviations, definitions and spelling are included. | HIM1000 | Introduction to Health Information Management Students will learn the history, purpose, content, as well as professional ethics and legal principles of the medical record and health information. | HIM1453 | Anatomy and Physiology This course is a presentation of the essential anatomy and physiology of the human body. All body organ systems are discussed in a format of lecture, diagrams, and audio-visual material. The course will introduce some aspects of chemistry and microbiology as it relates to healthcare, although emphasis is not placed in these areas. A knowledge of the anatomy and physiology of the human body as a basis for later study of disease processes is an essential part of the curriculum for students in the health profession. | 3 |
