Services for FacultyThe Seminole State Library provides resources, information and assistance to support teaching and learning. Librarians are on hand to provide library skills and research instruction, as well as consultations for scholarly communication initiatives regarding articles, books and advanced studies with which faculty may be involved. Librarians may be asked to perform literature searches and help prepare materials for courses and course websites. Please refer to the menu below for a variety of services offered to faculty, and contact us for further assistance. Collection DevelopmentSeminole State's library collections benefit from faculty participation in the process of selecting and deselecting materials. Faculty are encouraged to partner in the process by recommending materials, the number of copies needed, the format of materials and the location of materials at any campus library. Librarian liaisons assigned to specific subject specialties will work closely with faculty to develop resources in support of College curriculum. Use the library's online catalog and database search tools to review the library's current collection.
Librarian LiaisonsA librarian liaison is the faculty librarian assigned to a College department or program in order to foster communication and collaboration between Seminole State faculty and the library. With this service, the librarian shares his or her knowledge of library services, along with his or her expertise in research and information resources, to supplement faculty members' knowledge of their discipline subject. Building strong relationships with faculty and other campus professionals and establishing collaborative partnerships within and across institutions are the necessary building blocks to our success. Contact your librarian liaison for information and assistance on topics such as:
Library Information Literacy (IL) and Research InstructionThe Seminole State librarians conducted more than 500 classes and reached more than 11,000 students in the past year. The value of library instruction on the success of the student has been noted in the May 15 College Center for Library Automation's Brief Report: Student Success and eResource Usage: "The data from the two eResource access studies demonstrate a clear relationship between eResource usage and student success. Those who accessed more eResources tended to have higher GPAs, and those who completed a degree tended to have accessed more eResources during their college tenure. This is valuable information for those seeking to empirically demonstrate the value of libraries and library resources." Librarians work collaboratively with instructional faculty to ensure that students receive the introduction and develop the hands-on skill sets necessary to be successful in the research process. More about the Information Literacy sessions can be found on the library instruction Web page. Classes fill up quickly. Please book early in the term to ensure availability of instruction on your days/times of choice. A calendar of available times to book your course IL session on the Sanford/Lake Mary Campus is available along with the online form to make your selections. Online Library Instruction and Support The Seminole State Library embedded librarian initiative now offers real-time instruction through Blackboard Collaborate (formerly Elluminate) software and integration into Sakai courses via forums, chat and messaging. The library seeks to replicate the face-to-face experience of library instruction for distance learning students. Classes can be scheduled around regularly scheduled online course meetings or other convenient times. Content of library instruction can be tailored to your class' specific research needs. Faculty interested in this approach to library instruction should contact the librarians working wtih this initiative. Reserve MaterialsFaculty members may place materials on reserve for exclusive use by their students by contacting the circulation staff at the Sanford/Lake Mary, Oviedo, Altamonte Springs or Heathrow Campus library. Faculty members may stipulate a time frame for material use and whether the materials may be removed from the facility. Streamed and Film Video Options for Instruction Tours of Campus LibrariesGuided library tours are generally available to students who are taking ELS and/or Adult High School classes. During these basic information sessions, students:
Instruction in the use of library resources and research techniques is not included with the tours. Library Tours should be reserved in advance of the class coming to the library, and may also be done online on the library instruction Web page. |
