Collection Development

Seminole State's librarians are responsible for the overall development of the College's library collections. The determination of the educational resources to be offered by the library is a professional consideration of great magnitude and requires the cooperative efforts of librarians, faculty members, the associate director of libraries, and the dean of libraries and learning technology.

Each Seminole State librarian is assigned certain subject areas to develop in conjunction with faculty members from that area. Librarians work with these faculty members to select current and retrospective resources by:

• Reviewing materials requested by faculty members and questioning the selections' appropriateness as needed.
• Selecting materials for their assigned subject areas and making recommendations to faculty members for consideration.
• Asking faculty members to make recommendations for collection additions and withdrawals on a continuing basis.
• Asking faculty members to request support materials for their courses one term before the anticipated need date.

Librarians also serve as liaisons to the faculty to determine the depth and breadth needed for each collection area. Recommendations are accepted from Seminole State students as well as faculty and staff members for additions to the library collection. The materials selection request form will enable you to do this online. For more information about adding materials to or withdrawing materials from the collection, please contact the appropriate librarian liaison.

Collection Development Guidelines

Seminole State's library collections benefit from faculty input in regard to the selection and deselection of materials. Faculty are encouraged to partner in the process by recommending materials, the number of copies needed, the format of materials and the location of materials at any campus library. Librarian liaisons assigned to specific subject specialties will work closely with faculty to develop resources in support of College curriculum.

Levels of Development

Levels of development are reviewed annually.

• Minimal: Few selections are made beyond basic works and reference sources. Material is difficult to departmentalize but is of general interest and significance to the library. The material is interesting, provocative, challenging or innovative.
• Basic: A collection of up-to-date library materials intended to introduce and define a subject and convey a variety of information. Material is available elsewhere.
• Instructional Support: Materials are selected that adequately support the curriculum needs of the institution. Materials may be required reading, suggested reading or reading that is useful for student research. Materials include a wide range of basic monographs, a selection of representative journals, access to appropriate databases and the reference tools that pertain to the subjects. The materials are useful for faculty course preparation and the development of new courses.
• Faculty Research Materials: The library will acquire faculty research materials for the study and teaching of a subject but will carefully review faculty requests that are deemed highly specialized, excessively expensive or inappropriate for the research or teaching of a two-year college curriculum. In lieu of acquiring these definitive materials, the library will make every effort to locate and borrow the needed books and serials through Interlibrary Loan.

Recommendations will be accepted from faculty and staff members who are researching institutional or instructional development or improvements. The library will acquire recommended materials if their addition to the collection will be of value for longer than the life of the project. These research materials will be evaluated by the same criteria as other requested titles. Attempts to meet the researcher's needs with borrowed books or serials will be advised if requested titles are excessively expensive or of an ephemeral nature.

The library does not maintain a collection of materials written, edited or contributed by faculty or staff members. Purchases will be made, or gifts accepted, if the material meets collection development criteria and is in support of the curricula or programs of the college.
