Maps, Atlases and Gazetteers
Definitions and Usage
- A map is a representation, usually on a flat surface, of an entire area or a smaller section of it.
- An atlas is a bound collection of maps. It may focus on a single state, country or region, or it may include the entire world. Some atlases focus on a theme, such as historical, economic or social changes; the rest are considered general atlases.
- A gazetteer is a dictionary of place names, providing location information and, often, thumbnail historical sketches of the places described.
