Faculty Spotlight: Marisabel Irizarry

Marisabel Irizarry has been a humanities professor at Seminole State since 2003. She has extensive experience traveling abroad, visiting 13 countries in the last 13 years.

While there, they experienced the country's culture and institutions, observed how their careers are practiced abroad, exchanged ideas and developed professional relationships.

"My favorite part was living in the homes of Indian families," Irizarry says. "I was humbled by their level of generosity and the opportunity to experience Indian culture on such a deep level."

In addition to India, Irizarry has traveled to countries such as England, Italy, France, Austria and the United Arab Emirates. She was born in Puerto Rico.

Her goal, she says, is to visit at least one new country a year until she is "physically unable to travel anymore."

"When you travel, you learn that there is no one right way of doing things," she says. "You learn that people everywhere want the same basic things out of life, regardless of where they live. We are all more alike than we are different — there is no 'us' and 'them.'"

Irizarry has a Master of Arts degree in Latin American Studies from Georgetown University.
