What do interior designers do?

Interior designers work closely with architects, engineers and general contractors in a wide array of settings. Employment opportunities span the familiar private practice role to corporations across many industry sectors. Those sectors range from retail and restaurant establishments, to healthcare and government facilities, to commercial and residential real estate development firms, as well as the many furniture and decor supply chain companies. These firms hire interior designers to create environments that not only enhance sales and customer experience, but also create a more productive and pleasing work environment.

In accordance with clients' individual tastes, needs and budget, interior designers:

• Design public spaces to meet accessibility standards for the disabled and elderly
• Design space to meet standards for energy conservation and environmental sustainability
• Prepare drawings and use computer programs for design and layout specifications for non-load-bearing interior construction
• Select furnishings, such as furniture, floor coverings, window treatments, lighting fixtures, counter tops, hardware and accessories
• Coordinate colors, finishes and fabrics
• Design or select architectural details, such as crown molding, built-in bookshelves and cabinets
• Schedule and supervise work being done by hired or outsourced business contractors
• Design space to conform to federal, state and local laws, as well as building codes
