Counseling and Educational Planning

The Counseling and Educational Planning Department plays an integral part in empowering students to achieve success by actively facilitating their course of action from admission to completion of their educational goals. Services are available on all campus sites five days a week. The professional staff of academic advisors and counselors provides a full range of services including academic advising, career planning, and short-term mental health counseling. All services are free and available to all Seminole State students.

Academic Advising includes interpretation of test results, information on program requirements, assistance with course selection, information about College support systems, and assistance with study skills, educational planning, and graduation checks.

Educational Planning includes the development of an individualized term by-term plan for all courses to be completed in order to receive a degree or certificate.

Career Planning includes clarifying career interests and goals, selecting a major, and preparing to transfer to four-year colleges and universities. Students are encouraged to make the decision early regarding major selection in order to avoid mistakes in selecting courses.

Short-term mental health counseling is available to assist students when the distress of personal problems hinders academic achievement. Assistance can be provided for such personal issues as anxiety, depression, inter-personal relationships, stress, self-esteem, and more. Students may schedule individual appointments. Counseling contacts are kept confidential. Students needing long-term counseling will be referred to a community agency.

Faculty members are encouraged to refer students who may need services to the counseling staff. Workshops on study skills techniques, test anxiety and learning styles are available to assist students with developing the skills needed to be successful in completing their courses.

Student Financial Resources

The objective of the student financial aid program at Seminole State is to provide direct financial assistance to students who, without such aid, would be unable to attend the college. Financial aid is available for both college credit and some vocational certificate programs. When faculty become aware of students' financial needs, they should refer students to the Financial Aid Office. Students must complete the Free Application For Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) every year in order to be considered for all types of aid.
